You go up the popular Deadfall drainage, over Mount Eddy's west ridge into the wild and remote headwaters of the North Fork of the Sacramento River.  There, you drop 4,500' in elevation along the North Fork to end your hike.  And then you'll know where the Sacramento River comes from....
